Welsh Ponies
Imperial Stud first imported the Welsh stallion Weston Chilo (Imp) in 1976, as a six year old. He had already produced Weston Mary Ann, who was named Champion at the Royal Welsh and came to Australia in 1979. Weston Chilo won many Championships, both In-hand and Ridden, and produced many valuable broodmares for the stud, starting a dynasty of Section B Welsh Ponies.
The Weston Stud had their final auction in the UK in September 1979, offering a very good colt foal on Weston Choice (Imp), Weston Chippendale (Imp). Imperial purchased Weston Chippendale for the auction record for a foal at that time. He produced some great broodmares for the stud including Imperial Juliana.
Downland Warrior (Imp) was imported in 1991, a son of Downland Mohawk out of Downland Moonwalk. He proved to be an excellent cross with the Weston mares, producing outstanding stock, with his best son, Imperial Juggler out of Imperial Juliana.
Eyarth Tigra (Imp) was used on the Downland Warrior (Imp) daughters with much success, among them a son Imperial Pavarotti. His yearling daughter, Imperial Lady Athena sashed Best Exhibit at the 2017 NSW All Welsh Show and The National Welsh Show 2018. A colt, Imperial Jeronimo, was exported to the UK and won the Yearling Colt class at The Royal Welsh – the first Australian-bred pony ever to win there.
The Welsh Pony and Cob Society of Australia hosted The 20th International Show during November 2019. Imperial Pavarotti was sashed Supreme Champion Welsh Ponies and his daughter, Imperial Lady Athena, won Reserve Champion Youngstock.
Imperial Justify, Imperial Angelo and Imperial Matisse, all sons of Eyarth Tigra (Imp), are also being used in the stud, together with Imperial Juggler by Downland Warrior (Imp). The most recent arrival Downland Aristotle (Imp) by Downland Arcady has already left some very good progeny from the Imperial Juggler and Eyarth Tigra (Imp) daughters.
Several imported Welsh mares have played a significant role at Imperial Stud. Weston Jessica (Imp) came to the stud in 1978, with a filly foal by Weston Gigli (Imp) and has produced a total of sixteen foals. She left the stud with some outstanding daughters, the best being Imperial Juliana.
Imperial Juliana is producing both top class colts and fillies, most by Downland Warrior (Imp). Her progeny includes the full brothers Imperial Juggler, Juene, Jerome and Jackpot by Rotherwood Casino Royale. She produced Imperial Jerrard by Kirreway Playfair – who is all Weston breeding – as well as his full sister, Imperial Jasmin, who has been retained by the stud. Her daughters with Downland Warrior (Imp), Imperial Julianne and Justuella remained with the stud. Another outstanding son was Imperial Jericoe by Varndell Reveille (Imp).
We imported another mare, Rookery Grand Duchess (Imp) by Solway Master Bronze in 1980. She produced fourteen foals. Her descendants play an important role at Imperial Stud today. Producing some lovely Riding Ponies, her Welsh females have done very well. The four full sisters, Imperial Lady Jane, Lady Anne, Lady Sara and Lady Cathryn – all by Weston Chilo (Imp) and Imperial Lady Gwen by Weston Chippendale (Imp) – have gone on to produce some outstanding stock. Imperial Lady Anne was retained and her family has been outstanding. She had five full sisters by Downland Warrior (Imp), but it was her daughter, Imperial Lady Anouska by Imperial Juggler, that has had a huge influence on the stud today. Imperial Lady Anouska had Imperial Lady Alyss by Eyarth Tigra (Imp) and six full sisters by Imperial Pavarotti including Lady Athena. Lady Alyss has also produced five foals by Pavarotti. One of these foals – the stallion Imperial Alberta – has been exported to the UK.
Weston Picture (Imp) joined us in 1995. Imported by the Weston Stud, she was Champion at The Royal Welsh as a yearling in 1979. She has had a total of seventeen foals. Her last five – four fillies and a colt – were all by Downland Warrior (Imp) and bred at Imperial. Three fillies were retained, Imperial Picture Show, Picture This and Picture That, all producing outstanding progeny by Eyarth Tigra (Imp). Imperial Picture Show has won many awards in the show ring, but it was her progeny Imperial Pavarotti and his full sister Imperial Painted Picture that have solidified her legacy.
